It's becoming less frequent that you hear, "You're Nuts!" when the words "surfing" and "Alaska" are used in the same sentence. Although Surfer Magazine, Outside Magazine and others have tinkered with the novelty of surfing in Alaska, few have given it the serious coverage it deserves.

With more coastline than the total coast of the Lower 48, Alaska boasts endless river mouths, point, beach and reef breaks, most of them unsurfed and unexplored. The water temperatures are surprisingly warm between spring and fall, averaging 50-55 degrees and the surf can be epic. Alaskan weather can be unpredictable though, so it is a good idea to bring a strong sense of adventure and be just as eager to hook into a 200 pound halibut as you are to drop into a six-foot A-frame.

Many journalists capitalize on the danger of Alaskan wildlife, including brown bears, wolves and ocras ready to eat surfers whether they are in or out of the water. These are the same guys who had five near death experiences the last time they drove the 5 Freeway home from Trestles.
