Surf Alaska

Summary

It's becoming less frequent that you hear, "You're Nuts!" when the words "surfing" and "Alaska" are used in the same sentence. Although Surfer Magazine, Outside Magazine and others have tinkered with the novelty of surfing in Alaska, few have given it the serious coverage it deserves.

With more coastline than the total coast of the Lower 48, Alaska boasts endless river mouths, point, beach and reef breaks, most of them unsurfed and unexplored. The water temperatures are surprisingly warm between spring and fall, averaging 50-55 degrees and the surf can be epic. Alaskan weather can be unpredictable though, so it is a good idea to bring a strong sense of adventure and be just as eager to hook into a 200 pound halibut as you are to drop into a six-foot A-frame.

Many journalists capitalize on the danger of Alaskan wildlife, including brown bears, wolves and ocras ready to eat surfers whether they are in or out of the water. These are the same guys who had five near death experiences the last time they drove the 5 Freeway home from Trestles. While the Alaskan back country is nothing to be taken lightly (read: Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer), traveling with a knowledgeable guide and planning your trip through the Expedition Broker can not only lessen your fears, but increase your odds of having a safe, enjoyable surf trip.

We work with captains and pilots throughout Alaska with both live-aboard and day charter boats, all outfitted to provide you comfort and safety while offering the best opportunities to score the best surf. Contact the Expedition Broker to reserve your spot in the line-up!
