Nahanni River
"Mecca" for Canoe Trippers

Summary

If you are an avid canoeist, you will know that Nahanni is a mecca for all canoe trippers. A canoe expedition on the Nahanni is a lifetime pilgrimage for those who love to canoe.

Nahanni National Park is one of the most spectacular Parks in the Northwest Territories , perhaps the world. The South Nahanni River is one of North America 's finest wild streams and rushes 200 miles through the park. At Virginia Falls , the river cascades down to form this continent's most spectacular undeveloped waterfall, twice the height of Niagara Falls.

Immediately down river from the falls are 5 miles of nearly continuous rapids and standing waves created as the river flows through Fourth Canyon . There are strikingly different landscapes throughout the Park. Four great canyons, up to 4000 ft deep, line the river. At Rabbitkettle Hot Springs, warm (70 degree) water radiates outward to form an intricately terraced mound of tufa rock, more than 90 feet high. A mountain landscape embraces the canyon.

Numerous rapids, several hot springs and unlimited hiking opportunities are among the other highlights of the river. The valley is dominated by geological features so unique that Nahanni National Park was declared the first World Heritage Site by the United Nations.
