Alsek River
The Grand Canyon of the North

Summary

The Alsek River is considered World Class by river running professionals. From the big drop at "Lava North", to the Class V helicopter portage at Turnback Canyon , this expedition leaves a lasting impression of the ruggedness of the North. Journey through the center of the largest contiguous protected area in the World: Kluane National Park, BC Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park and Glacier Bay National Park .

The Alsek River is a place where the awesome forces of glaciation are still at work and is one of the World's most beautiful alpine regions. Unlike the Tatshenshini, just one valley over, the Alsek is more remote and unexplored and carries a much greater volume of water with larger rapids. Hiking above the river valley yields incredible views of glaciated peaks, bears, moose and wolves.

The journey reaches its full crescendo at Alsek Lake , where massive pieces of glacial ice can be seen calving into the lake while Mt. Fairweather , the crown jewel of the Alaska coast, towers 15,300 feet above.
